History of School of Nursing (SON), Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH)

The School of Nursing (SON), Lagos University Teaching Hospital was established in July 1962 under Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) and under the same decree on which the hospital was founded. The first intake of the School was sixteen (16) students and there were only two (2) tutors and a health educator as the teaching staff. The educational requirement then was attempted West African School Certificate Examination.

In February 1965, Miss H. Joyce, a representative of the General Nursing Council for England and Wales visited the school. After the first visit, the school was granted recognition and full recognition as the Nurses trained in England and Wales. The Hospital Final Examination was accepted as the qualifying and registering examination both for England and Wales and also for the General Nursing Council of Nigeria. By the year 1966, the intake of students had increased to one hundred and twenty (120) per year and intake was done twice yearly in May and in November.

In December 1966, the Nursing Council of Nigeria introduced a new standard and made it mandatory that all training schools take the Final Qualifying Examination set by the Council. Students still got full reciprocity with England and Wales but they must be successful both in the Hospital Final Examination as well as in the Nigeria Nursing Council’s Examination. At the end of December 1986, a directive came from the Nursing and Midwifery Council that beginning from 1987, intake into Schools of Nursing and Midwifery should be once a year.

The School now admits once a year and entrance to the School is in October. Entry requirements compare favourably with those for other professional courses. To qualify for admission into the school, a prospective student must have a minimum of five (5) credits in the West African School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) or National Examination Council (NECO), inclusive of credits in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology at one or two sittings.

Qualified candidates take the entrance examination which is in three (3) phases. Successful candidates are interviewed by a panel for final selection. The course of study lasts for three (3) years leading to the award of Registered Nurse (RN).

The school is currently headed by Adetunji A. J. (Director, Nursing Education/Principal/Head of School). The current academic staff strength is sixteen (16) with a students’ population of two hundred and twenty five (225).

The SON, LUTH is one of the best approved and recognized Schools of Nursing in Nigeria. It is well known for its flexibility, range of facilities and modern equipment, high profile of good performance in the Council Examination as well as a safe, interesting and comfortable environment where students can live and study.
