The nature of SON LUTH entrance examination

In recent years thousands of candidates apply to be admitted into the School of Nursing (SON), Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) for the basic nursing (general nursing) training programme out of which a final selection of 50 – 70 candidates will be made strictly on merit.

The selection is made using three stages of entrance examinations. A candidate makes it to the next stage by passing the test of the previous stage.

The first stage is an aptitude test that evaluates basic intelligence of applicants. Candidates can prepare for this stage using standard aptitude tests that evaluate quantitative reasoning, verbal aptitude, basic arithmetic and current affairs.

The second stage tests academic proficiency in O-level English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Candidates can prepare using WASSCE and UTME past questions.

The third stage is an oral interview where candidates appear before faculty staff of the SON, LUTH and are evaluated. Candidates are advised to dress appropriately and compose themselves properly for this stage.

The final 50 – 70 candidates that are admitted are those who successfully make it through the three stages of the selection process.

      Phase 1 is an aptitude test;

    1. The aptitude test is objective. You should practice the appropriate past questions and use your textbooks when you need to understand the topics that the questions test.

    1. Ensure to be at the exam venue in LUTH by 7am on Saturday, June 9 and ask an official if by then you have not received notification of your exact exam time.

    1. In 2017 there were 200 questions answered in 2 hours 30 minutes and it was paper based. However, indications reaching us suggest that this year’s test will be computer based test (CBT).

    1. The results for the first phase examination have been released. I do not know if there will be an updated list.

    1. The second phase exam was written on Saturday, June 23, 2018. Successful candidates in that exercise have been invited to the interview phase on Tuesday, July 3, 2018.

    1. Congratulations Confidence on making it to the interview phase. My advice to you is to dress appropriately for the occasion. Dress formally. The questions you will be asked are simple questions about yourself and why you want to enrol for the nursing programme. Endeavour to be relaxed. Your goal is to convince the interview panel that you will be a good nursing student.

      If you will be asked academic questions it won’t be outside the scope of the tests you wrote. So since you passed the two tests you won’t have problems with any academic questions.

  32. Sir,I haven’t been unable to visit the school of nursing for my first phase result,due to some terrible things that happened to me
    And I didn’t even receive any message on my phone from the school…. I didn’t sit for the second phase exam and the third one

    1. The admission process for this year has been concluded. The next opportunity to apply will open in February 2019.
