JOINT ADMISSIONS AND MATRICULATION BOARD SALE OF 2017 UTME/D.E. APPLICATIONS

1.0          2017 UTME AND D.E. APPLICATIONS

1.1          Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for admission to Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria for the 2017/2018 academic session.

2.0          REGISTRATION PERIOD

2.1          The period of sale/registration for UTME is from Monday, 20th March to Wednesday, 19th April, 2017 while registration closes on Saturday 22nd April 2017.

For DIRECT ENTRY, the application will be on sale from Sunday 23rd April, 2017.

 

3.0          STEPS FOR 2017 REGISTRATION AND APPLICATION DOCUMENTS

  1. Each candidate must have personal e-mail address and mobile phone number.
  2. Each candidate is to use his/her functional and valid personal e-mail address. The system would reject at the point of registration any already used e-mail address.
  3. Each candidate must personally create a JAMB profile on the JAMB portal through JAMB Mobile App available on Android, Windows and IOS platforms OR visit a Bank, NIPOST to create his/her JAMB profile on the JAMB portal: www.jamb.org.ng. Name, date of birth, personal e-mail address and place of origin are required to create the profile.
  4. Payment for JAMB’s E-PIN-registration and recommended reading text is done at the banks and NIPOST. Banks have also agreed to make these services available at CBT centres and JAMB State Offices.
  5. Each Candidate should visit any accredited CBT centre (the list of accredited CBT centres are on our website i.e. www.jamb.gov.ng) with his/her personal details, the profile and evidence of payment.
  6. The CBT centre or JAMB State Office, supplies, at no extra cost, the prescribed reading text and the CD containing:
  1. e-brochure showing guidelines on admission detailing list of tertiary institutions and available programmes of study.
  2. Syllabus (e-syllabus) for the examination.
  3. Step by step guide on completing the application form.
  4. Video messages from the Registrar of JAMB and a demo on how to use eight (8) keys for UTME examination without mouse. (For candidates with little familiarity with Computers)

 

7. Each Candidate is to complete the online application form by supplying the required details such as name, e-mail address, L.G.A, academic qualifications, etc.

8. At the CBT centre, Candidate’s ten fingers biometric and image will be captured and uploaded.

9. O/L and/or A/L grades are to be provided by candidates. Candidates who are awaiting result should supply the result online as soon as the results are available on JAMB’s portal. No recommendations from any institution will be considered by JAMB if the candidate has not supplied his/her O/L result on the portal of JAMB.

10. Each Candidate is to collect his e-slip at the end of registration as evidence of registration. There will be no offline registration, as all the accredited CBT centres have been empowered for real life online registration. No candidate should register at any centre other than the accredited CBT centre and JAMB State Office. Any candidate who is registered outside approved centres will be identified and disqualified.

 

4.0          GENERAL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

4.1          The general entry requirements for admission into the First Degree, National Diploma (ND), National Innovation Diploma (NID) and Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) programmes in Universities, other Degree-Awarding Institutions, Monotechnics, Polytechnics, Innovation Enterprise Institutes and Colleges of Education are available in the e-Brochure which would be given to each Candidate at the accredited CBT centres and JAMB state offices.

4.2          Candidates with one of the following qualifications may be considered for admission by Direct Entry:

  1. A minimum of five (5) GCE/WASCE credits at not more than two sittings with at least two Principal or Advanced level G.C.E and the others.
  2. Two passes at the IJMB Advanced Level Examination, Cambridge moderated Schools of Basic Studies Terminal Examination, JUPEB or Institute of Baccalaureate from recognised institutions with SSCE/GCE, NTS/NBC credits equivalent in three other subjects (SUBJECT TO UNIVERSITY REQUIREMENTS).
  3. Passes in two major subjects in the NCE with S.S.C.E., NTC/NBC credits or equivalents in THREE other subjects (mainly for Education Courses) and ND. Education may be accepted as a third A’Level subject for those taking courses in Education.
  4. Minimum of lower credit grade in National Diploma or National Innovation Diploma including the O’Level requirements.
  5. Candidates are to note that they will be required to provide their JAMB registration number which they used in gaining admission to NCE, Diploma etc for Direct Entry admission.

 

5.0          ORDER OF CHOICE OF INSTITUTIONS

5.1          On the 2017 registration platform, Candidates are to note that their 1st choice can be a College of Education, University, Innovative Enterprise Institutes, Polytechnics/Monotecnics, NDA (Nigerian Defence Academy) or Nigeria Police Academy.

 

6.0          DATE AND VENUE FOR THE 2017 UNIFIED TERTIARY MATRICULATION EXAMINATION

6.1          The 2017 UTME will commence on 6th May and end on 20th May, 2017 (excluding May 12, 2017 because of Candidates sitting for WAEC’s Further Mathematics examination).

6.2          The venue of the examination will be at any centre in the candidate’s chosen examination town.

 

7.0          REGISTRATION FEE

7.1          Registration fee for 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination or Direct Entry is Five Thousand Naira (N5,000) only. Candidates are also, as usual, to pay Five Hundred Naira (N500) only to obtain the reading text – ‘In Dependence’ for UTME candidates and “The Last Days at Forcados High School” for Direct Entry Candidates.

7.2          Candidates should note that e-PINS being purchased are tied to individual profile and are not transferable.

7.3          Candidates are advised to keep as confidential their security details such as registration numbers, password/numbers of ATM Cards, e-mail addresses and E-Pins.

 

8.0          OPTIONAL UTME-MOCK-EXAMINATION

The Board will mount a mock examination in all the accredited CBT centres to prepare and familiarise INTERESTED Candidates with the CBT environment. Interested candidates are advised to indicate their interest in the mock examination during the registration process.

The CBT Centres are allowed to collect through their (CBT Centres) bank accounts, a separate Seven Hundred Naira (N700) only, for this exercise after notification of centre has been received by the Candidate. The payment for mock examination shall be made to the centres to which the candidate is assigned after the notification of assigned centres for the mock examination. No Association or body is permitted to run any mock examination on behalf of JAMB.

NOTE: Do not pay for Mock until JAMB assigns you to a CBT centre.

The mock examination shall take place on Saturday 8th April, 2017.

 

9.0          REGISTRATION CENTRES

9.1          In line with the Board’s regulated registration exercise, only the accredited Computer Based Test Centres and JAMB States and FCT Offices will be allowed to register candidates.

This is to avoid exploitation, off-line registration, mismatch of candidates’ particulars and other registration-irregularities.

 

10.0        GENERAL INFORMATION

10.1        The registration fee, once paid is non-refundable.

10.2        Registration for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) is available at the CBT centres and JAMB Offices nationwide. The accredited centres have been empowered to assist in this regard.

10.3        As it is the practice, centres are allowed to charge not more than Seven Hundred Naira (N700) only as registration fee. Any centre that charges more than Seven Hundred Naira (N700) should be reported to JAMB for appropriate sanctions.

10.4        All CBT centres have been mandated to select any of the participating banks. These banks are to be present in their premises for the purposes of collecting all fees. No centre-staff is allowed to conduct cash transactions with the candidates.

10.5        Candidates are advised to read and understand the guidelines on admission and instructions on how to complete the online registration before commencing the process of registration.

10.6        Multiple registrations are not allowed. Candidates who register more than once will be identified and disqualified.

10.7        Candidates should note that their uploaded image or photograph will be embossed on their result slips and admission letters.

10.8        Candidates are to note that irrespective of their choice of course of study or method of testing, they will also be tested on a general text: “In Dependence” by Sarah Ladipo Manyika for UTME and “The Last Days at Forcados high School” by A. H. Mohammed for Direct Entry Candidates.

10.9        Candidates are warned that the Board has not authorised or solicited the services of ANY establishment/group or individual other than the accredited CBT centres for this registration/exercise.

Graduates of University of Lagos or any other university recognized by Senate (only candidates with good degrees in relevant disciplines will be considered for admission at enhanced entry level).

(b)

Holders of Higher National Diploma (HND) or National Diploma (ND) or National Certificate in Education (NCE) in the relevant disciplines.
For this category, please note that only holders of HND with at least Upper Credit will be eligible for admissions at enhanced entry level.

(c)

Holders of recognized relevant full professional qualifications such as ACA, ACCA, ACMA, ACIA, ACIS, ACIB, CII, may be considered for admission at enhanced level provided they have five credits at WASSCE/SSCE/GCE/NECO (O’ Level) or its equivalent, which must include English Language, Mathematics, Economics plus any other two subjects at not more than two (2) sittings.

(d)

Holders of WASSCE/SSCE/GCE/NECO (O’ Level) or its equivalent with credit in five (5) subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Economics plus any other two subjects at not more than two (2) sittings.

NOTE: Point of entry for candidates in categories a, b and c will depend on details of their Transcripts and such candidates must also satisfy the WASSCE/SSCE/GCE/NECO (O’ Level) or its equivalent as stated in (d) above.

2.2.

B.Sc. ECONOMICS
QUALIFICATIONS FOR ENTRY INTO YEAR ONE
WASSCE/SSCE/GCE/NECO (O’ Level) or its equivalent with 5 credits to include English Language, Mathematics, Economics plus any other two (2) subjects at not more than two (2) sittings.

B.Sc. PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION
QUALIFICATIONS FOR ENTRY INTO YEAR ONE
WASSCE/SSCE/GCE/NECO (O’ Level ) or its equivalent with 5 credits to include English Language, Mathematics, Government plus any other two (2) subjects at not more than two (2) sittings.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR ENTRY INTO YEAR ONE
Applicants must have relevant professional experience, plus any ONE of the following three qualifications:

(a)

WASSCE/SSCE/GCE/NECO (O’ Level) or its equivalent with credits in five subjects including English Language and Mathematics and at least two other science subjects at not more than two (2) sittings from the following:

(i)

B.Sc. Education Biology
Biology, Chemistry and one other Science subject (of Physics or Agricultural Science).

(ii)

B.Sc. Education Chemistry
Chemistry and any two of Physics, Biology, Agricultural Science or any other Science subject.

(iii)

B.Sc. Education Mathematics
Physics and two other Science subjects of Chemistry, Biology, Agricultural Science or any other Science subject (including at least a pass in Further Mathematics).

(iv)

B.Sc. Education Physics
Physics and Chemistry and one other Science subject of Biology, Agricultural Science or any other science subject.

(b)

Teacher’s Grade II Certificate (TCII) with at least Merit in five subjects including English Language, Mathematics and at least two other science subjects at the TCII/WASSCE/SSCE/NECO/GCE (Ordinary Level) or its equivalent.

(c)

Any other qualification that may be considered equivalent to (a) and (b) above, by the University Senate.

QUALIFICATION FOR ENTRY INTO YEAR TWO

(a)

Two A/Level passes in proposed subjects of study (Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics) plus the WASSCE/GCE/SSCE/NECO (O’ Level) or its Equivalent with credit in five subjects in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and any other science subject. (For Education Mathematics at least a pass in Further Mathematics is Compulsory).

(b)

National Certificate in Education (NCE) obtained from the former College of Education, University of Lagos, in the Science subjects to be offered, or from any College of Education recognised by the Senate of the University of Lagos with Credit/Merit (in proposed subject of study) and any other Science subject.

GENERAL INFORMATION

a.

Applicants for Distance Learning Institute programme shall not be less than 21 years of age by 31st December, 2016.

b.

Offer of admission to programmes listed above is subject to viable number of qualified applicants

c.

On-line Print Out Results Slips will not be honoured at the point of registration.

d.

Candidates awaiting results are not eligible to apply.

e.

Certificates and not Statement of Result Slips are acceptable for WASCE/SSCE/GCE/NECO results obtained before 2008.

f.

All completed application forms are to be submitted on or before 30th May, 2017.

g.

Candidates should be on the lookout for the date and details of a selection test.

4.

METHOD OF APPLICATION

Step 1: Payment Reference PINs Generation (www.dli.unilag.edu.ng)

Step 2: Applicant goes to any of the designated banks – Ecobank, Access, Wema, UBA, Zenith or First Bank and pays the application fee of N17,500 (Seventeen Thousand, Five Hundred Naira) only. Candidates will be given a receipt which contains a CON – Confirmation Order Number.

Step 3: Applicant is given online access to the Application Form at www.dli.unilag.edu.ng and fills in all necessary information, submits and prints a copy. (Applicant is also given the opportunity to save Application Form and later complete the Form in case certain information are not readily available).

Getting it right in your university admission application in Nigeria through UTME

In the 2016/2017 university admission season the story went viral on the internet about a young lady who scored 320/400 in her UTME but failed to make the merit list to study Medicine and Surgery at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife.

Her inability to make the merit list for medicine and surgery in OAU with her high UTME score can be understood when you consider the new JAMB admission rules where a candidate’s total score is an aggregate of their O-level results and their UTME score.

In the new JAMB admission rules released in 2016, O-level results are weighted to make up 40% of the total score while the UTME make up the remaining 60% of the total score. So, the young lady who scored 320/400 in her UTME was let down by her O-level aggregate score.

To make the merit list for Medicine and Surgery at the University of Lagos (Unilag) with 320/400 in 2016 a candidate would have required an O-level aggregate of 30/40. This can be interpreted as having an O-level result of 2 As, 2 Bs and 1 C in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics at one sitting.

The new JAMB admission rules mean that O-level results have been given more importance. It implies that making the minimum credit pass in the required five subjects at one sitting my no longer suffice especially for highly competitive courses like Medicine and Surgery, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Engineering, Computer Science, Law, English Language, Mass Communication, Architecture, Accounting, Business Administration, and Economics. The candidate should aim for A1s in their O-levels to stand a better chance of gaining admission into a University in Nigeria.

Equally important is that applicants must have the proper subject combination in their O-levels and their UTME for a successful admission application. For instance, many applicants do not know that Further Mathematics is a requirement to study Engineering, Computer Science and Mathematics in most Nigerian universities, just as Literature in English is a requirement for Law, English Language, and Mass Communication.

Without the proper subject combination, even with high O-level and UTME scores, a school can deny admission to an applicant. Therefore, the application process is a very important one and parents, guardians, teachers and the candidates must have the right information to make good choices for the applicant.

When a course of study has been identified it is important that:

  1. The right O-level and UTME subject combination is selected;

  2. The candidate should know what O-level results they need for a successful application;

  3. The candidate should know what UTME score they need for their course;

  4. The candidate should know what school options are at their disposal and which ones would favour them more than others.

Finally, candidates, parents, guardians and teachers must be honest with the candidate and make realistic choices based on the ability and capability of the candidate. There are many courses and schools to choose from. A high cut-off mark is usually a function of the demand for the course.

How To Register For 2016/2017 Unilag Post Utme Screening

The University of Lagos online registration for the Screening Exercise for Admission into ALL COURSES/PROGRAMMES for the 2016/2017 Academic Year will commence from Wednesday, August 3 to Wednesday, August 24, 2016.

ELIGIBLE CANDIDATES:
Candidates who made University of Lagos their first choice in the 2016 UTME and scored 200 and above are eligible for the screening. In addition, candidates must possess five (5) credit passes at one sitting in relevant O/level subjects including English Language and Mathematics.

Candidates, who will not be sixteen (16) years of age by Monday, October 31, 2016 are not eligible and need not apply.

Candidates who are awaiting results are also eligible to apply for the screening. Such candidates will be allowed to upload their results when they are released only if they applied within the specified period. Candidates are advised to check the University website for the specified period.

SCREENING FEE: – N2,500

REGISTRATION PROCEDURE:
Eligible candidates should log on to University website www.unilag.edu.ng. Then, take the following steps:

· Click on Full-Time Undergraduate Admission
· Click on Post-UTME Screening
· Login with UTME number and surname in lowercase as password
· Generate payment advice
· Proceed to any commercial bank to make payment
· Return to the Unilag portal to complete the screening form

JAMB Officially Drops Cut-off Mark for 2016 Admission and Adopts Point System Option

JAMB has finally ditched the allocation of cut off-marks for admissions into tertiary institutions in Nigeria, the guideline for the 2016 admission process released on Monday evening has shown.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced the release of its guidelines for the 2016 admissions’ process.

The method, described as the point system option, was adopted after an extensive one-week meeting JAMB had with universities and other tertiary institutions’ administrators in the country.

According to the guidelines contained in a statement placed on its website on Monday night, JAMB said that the modalities were going to be based on point system.

While explaining how the admission process would work for Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination candidates and direct entry students, the organisation stated that universities were going to charge fees for screening of candidates at the end of the process for admission.

According to JAMB, the new method uses a point system to offer provisional admission to candidates.

“Before a candidate can be considered for screening, he/she must have been offered a provisional admission by JAMB. The JAMB admission checker portal is going to be opened soon for this process, so praying is all you can do now,” JAMB said.

The second process, it said, was the point system where admission would depend on the point tally of the candidate.

The statement said, “JAMB’s provisional admission no longer makes much sense this year, your points tally will decide your faith. The points are evenly spread out between your O’ Level and JAMB results to provide a level-playing field for all.

“In the first case, any candidate who submits only one result which contains his/her relevant subjects already has 10 points. The exam could be NECO, WASSCE, November/December WASSCE etc, but any candidate who has two sittings only gets 2 points. So this means that candidates with only one result are at an advantage but only just.”

The organisation added that the “next point grades fell into the O’ Level grades where each grade would have it equivalent point; A=6 marks, B=4 marks, C=3 marks, so the better the candidates’ grades, the better his or her chances of securing admission this year.

“The next point is the UTME scores where each score range has its equivalent point which can be summarised thus, 180-200=20-23 marks, 200-250=24-33 points, 251-300=34-43, 300-400=44-60 points,” JAMB explained.

Giving a breakdown, JAMB explained that each category would contain five JAMB results per point added.

For example a candidate with 180-185 gets 20 points, while a candidate with 186-190 gets 21 points. JAMB added that the point system for direct entry would be released soon.

JAMB stated that fees would still be charged for screening which would replace the Post UTME test. It also emphasised that catchment and educationally less-developed state would still be used for admission into the nation’s tertiary institutions.

JAMB said, “Merit contains 45 per cent of the total candidates for a particular course, Catchment contains 35 per cent and ELDS and staff lists contains the rest. Cut off marks will be released by the institutions this year in the form of points and not marks.

“If a school declares its cut off mark for Medicine as 90 points and JAMB grants a candidate with 250 a provisional admission but his/her total points falls short of the 90 points, then he/she will lose the admission. So the provisional admission is just a means to an end, not the end in itself.”

How our home tutorials prepare our candidates for Unilag Post UTME and Foundation Programme entrance examinations

The candidates for whom we provide home tutorials towards University of Lagos (Unilag) entrance examinations fall into two categories. The first category are those who have unsuccessfully attempted JAMB/UTME/Post UTME/Foundation Programme entrance exams at least once while the second category are fresh school leavers.

The approach to preparing these two categories of candidates are different but they both aim at the same goal of preparing the candidates adequately to succeed in their entrance exams.

Usually, because they have been out of school for some time the first category of candidates are a little low on confidence when we first meet them and may feel they are forgetting what they learned in school. With no WASSCE or NECO to distract them however, there is usually enough time to focus and prepare them for the Post UTME or Foundation Programme entrance exams. Our early classes assess the candidates to know their state of readiness for the exams and by the time we are mid-way into the tutorial sessions, we have identified their areas of strength and weakness. We are then able to tune our preparation to meet the individual needs of the candidate.

In-between our tutorial sessions we give home works and encourage our candidates to study by themselves to build on their academic skill and proficiency.

In the course of the tutorials we give five assessments similar in strength to the actual examination being prepared for such that by the time our candidates are writing the actual Post UTME or Foundation Programme entrance exam it would appear to them that they writing the same exam for the sixth time! By this time they are poised to succeed.

The second category of our candidates are fresh school leavers who have just spent the previous three months of April – June writing WASSCE and NECO. They are usually exam fatigued by the time, towards the end of June, when we begin our preparations and typically have about four – six weeks before Post UTME and Foundation Programme entrance exams.

They have also spent the previous three school years preparing for school leaving examinations which are of a different nature to Post UTME and Foundation Programme. While preparing them for WASSCE/NECO can be likened to preparing them to win a game of football within the 90 minutes regulation time, preparing them for Post UTME and Foundation Programme can be likened to preparing them for extra time and penalty kicks.

Whichever category our candidates belong to we let them know of the challenge before them and show them how to surmount it. Additionally, we try to reinforce into them the ability to study by themselves which is critical for success at the University.

LagTutor.com hosts a database of cut-off marks for undergraduate courses at the University of Lagos, (Unilag), Nigeria for the years 2011, 2012, 2013 2014 and 2015.

Knowledge about the cut-off marks for the various courses in Unilag enables one to make good decisions about what course to apply for and what score to aim for in the UTME and post UTME in order to be successful in one’s admission quest.
